We hold these reviews for your use in the second run theaters and for our Oscar selections at the end of the year.

Public Enemy

Her:  What could be wrong when you spend 2 hours with cutie Johnny Depp?  I would do it over and over.  I hate when I talk to the other critics because they make me see what I might not have seen on my own.  I walked out of this film having enjoyed the experience. Period. Even nostalgic to remember that on horribly hot days of the summer in Chicago, we would go to the movie show to experience "Air Conditioning".  What a thrill.   However, the handheld style used today was applied to this period piece and seemed out of place.  Most shots were closeup which I found distracting. The film seemed to be like TV film, like Playhouse 90 in the '50's. Maybe they intended it to look that way but I found it confused my minds eye.  Those were my observations but one critic said there was no character development, they gave us little reason to care if anything bad happened to these people...I fear they were right.  You all know, if you have been listening, that I hate Christian Bale and he played a part where he couldn't catch a thief if it rolled over him.  Marion Cotilliard was beautiful in her close-ups but again, how could a girl go with a guy that would change her life to that degree in such a short time.  They gave us such little emotion.  I gave it 2 weak points.

HIS: What American male doesn't like a good gangster movie?  As Dillinger, John Depp is perfect casting.  He under plays the part and we seem to see him as more lucky than smart.  His major crime career was only 4 years.  Would he had been that famous if Hoover wasn't trying to the to build the FBI rep. They say you measure your stature by the stature of your enemies. Call him Public Enemy #1 and when you catch him, you'll number one!
The movie had a lot of very loud shooting and many soft & quite conversations.  Christian Bale as Purvis was a good chose because they wanted us to dislike the character and I'm half way there with Bale's wooden face & low voice approach to all his roles. This is an okay gangster movie for the summer but it's no Road to Perdition. 2 points

Star Trek

StoryA chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members.  We see the history of the Capt. Kirk and Spock and the story of how that memorible crew is assembled for the first of many Space adventures.  Watch "Bones", "Scotty","Sulu","Chekov"and the beautiful "Uhura"as they start their careers on the Enterprise.

HIS:  Whoever did the casting in this film hit a home run!  I have followed the series since it's original TV debut (not the reruns).  Unlike Star Wars, this prequel has a cast that looks like, and has the same mannerisms of the original cast.  They are just what we hoped they were like in their 20's.  In their own right, this cast puts in a performance that will keep the old trekies and the young trekies coming back for more. For me, while the special effects were excellent, they did not overshadow the story and the character development---this is a good thing!  We have substance and action, what more could you want in a summer movie. If you've never been a Trekie, hop on now and enjoy the ride 3 points

HER:  Trekies will not be stopped by a movie review so go forth and enjoy.  For the rest of us, you are late.  Get in your car and drive to the theater for a ride of your life.  I can't help but steal this idea from Pat..."The Cast is perfect".  The writing is tight, crisp and humorous.  All the little inside jokes are there.  Now let's talk about that cast:  Chris Pine, James T. Kirk, a rowdy fellow that takes the bridge of the Starship Enterprise (I am not sure how he went from 25 years of debauchery to captain so soon...it's a movie), he is a risk taker.  Then we have Zachery Quinto (who is making all the rounds in interviews) from Heroes, he is Spock and a mighty good one too.  Simon Pegg (Scotty) is my favorite, he adds so much humor.  Everyone is present including Spock...the older generation.  Yes, Leonard Nimoy meets himself coming and going.  Plenty of nostalgia, humor, sexy, young and old, fazers and conversations about "shields" to keep any trekie and their girlfriends, that they drag to the theater (and she secretly loves Trek too but this gives her something to hold over his head) HAPPY!  3 Points

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE

Story  It all starts in the 1850's when James Logan aka Wolverine and his brother Victor Creed (who will later become Sabretooth) run away together as children after Logan kills their biological father. After serving together in many wars they are recruited by William Stryker to serve in a special unit made up of mutants. This relationship goes from bad to worst as the film fights its way to the birth of the indestructible "Wolverine".

HER: The fast paced Action should be enough for this Summer Blockbuster that should only be seen on the big screen.  There are actors I don't like, example, Christian Baile, nothing he does is good in my eyes.  BUT Hugh Jackman...I LOVE Hugh.  I loved him in "The Boy From Oz", I loved him at the Oscars.  You must know this because Hugh not only is the STAR but the Producer of this heart filled tale of how the boy became the character, Wolverine.  We see him from being a lad to growing, making mistakes (I love fallibility) to the man we see in the sequels and the people who help him along the way. We also meet his family, his brother Liev Schrieber who is the black sheep of the family, sometimes more of a distraction than he needed to be.  I loved this film  Huge 2 points

HIS: The summer has arrived and as far as action films are concerned, it may be all down hill from here.  The new Star Trek film will have to work, if it wants to be number 1.  Hugh Jackson is Wolverine, it's his role and he is it.  The supporting characters all do their part and come across real(as real as you can be in a scifi movie). If I care about the characters, I like the movie.  Here I care for many and even hate a few.  This is Hollywood realism.  Plenty of action and special effects although, the fight scenes between the brothers got predictable and hence "same old, same old".  The summer is entertainment time and I was entertained.  2 points

EVERLASTING  MOMENTS:

HIS: Swedish films have a tendency to be somewhat dark.  they like to view life from the worst scenario view.  this onw however, has a sweet side.  Set in the early 20th century, we see a woman deal with poverty, drunkand husband, World War I, family problems and community pressures.  But for a camera, it would be unbearable.  When she takes pictures, her gray world has brightness and we find a smile come over our serious faces.  In sight to the human condition & spirit and a smile on our face is what we get from this movie.  3 points

HER:  When I realized this was a Swedish film I was intrugued.  When I realized this was my Grandparents story I was in love.  Anyone who does not have Swedish background then it is just a story about a family at the turn of the century and the strong woman who sacraficed to lead them through life.  Life has it's ups and downs, her husband is a womanizing drunk but in the end he works everyday to feed his ever growing family.  No one, at that time had it easy but when the politics stopped their lives got better.  The only respite she had was a camera and no one could take that away from her.  This is a diamond in the rough  3 Points

SUNSHINE CLEANING:

HIS:
Amy Adams is my new sweetheart.  She is simply pretty, sincere with a good dose of optimisnm. Team with the contrsting Emily Blount, throw in Alan Arkin as referee and you have a fun film that illustrates the essence of family.  No academy award winner but in the "Spring Slumps", this is an enjoying evening for all.  2 points

HER: Amy Adams and Emily Bount, what a pair.  While cleaning a mansion she realizes it is owned by a school chum, could it get worse?  While boinking her married boyfriend he suggests she cleans up after death disasters for BIG money.  We see her professional rise in the industry, with the help of some old and new friends on her journey to get her son into a private school.  This is a slice of life that is well written, acted and any movie that you get lost in, is precious.  3 Points

TAKEN

HER:  This action thriller is one of the best I have seen.  Liam Neeson is a retired "Secret Agent" with skills and warns the kidnapper that has taken his daughter when she goes to Europe for a romp.  Of course, the kidnapper does not take him seriously and says, "good luck", oh, he shouldn't have done that.   And the chase begins.  SEE THIS MOVIE.  3 Points.

HIS:  I was on the edge of me seat for the entire movie.  Liam Neeson was perfect for the part.  Only 96 hours to save your daughter, what would you do?  I would hope I to rise to the occasion as Neeson did.  3 points

The READER

Her:  All I had heard about this movie were the explicit sexual scenes and yes the journey of a 15 year old who worked his way into an adult woman's bed was so consuming that I never saw the story of literacy coming.  This is the type of film that you will be thinking about for days to come.  Ralph Finnes finally plays a normal person instead of the villain he normally plays.  Kate Winslett is brilliant.  When you are in a contemplative place, this is the film to see.         3 points.

HIS:  Award winning performance by Winslett, Ralph Finnes the typical "Milk Toast".  The trauma of illiteracy is tragic in that is is curable.  Great movie.  3 points.

Gran Torino
HER -  I have never seen Clint Eastwood as a good actor.  He may be a good director but he is as interesting as dry toast when acting.  "Gran Torino" is an interesting story, with a good twist.  Clint sleepwalked through the first part which the girl with the snappy dialogue saved.  The old codger, intollerant to what is happening around him finds himself an island in an ethnic rundown neighborhood and has the skills to teach this kid to exhibit pride with his spare time.  2 Soft Points.
